I was the first in my family born in the United States. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I started visiting my ancestral birthplace of Siderno Marina in Calabria, Italy. Since many of my relatives in Italy had either visited the United States, or lived here for short periods of time, I was very fortunate to see Italy from the eyes of someone who lives there, and not as a tourist. On one of my trips, my cousin Antonio invited me to join him on a Sunday morning ride to a bakery in the next seaside town of Gioiosa Ionica to get a loaf of bread for that day’s lunch. I was pleasantly surprised that the “bakery” was a shack with a stone oven in someone’s backyard. We waited in hungry anticipation as our loaf was freshly baked. I held the warm loaf, wrapped in paper, close to my chest as we drove home.
